As well as testing sight and prescribing glasses, they are trained to recognise potentially blinding eye conditions and refer them on. The new initiative will enable specially trained optometrists to write a prescription if they diagnose a problem needing treatment, avoiding the need for patients to make a separate visit to their GP.
