What is the Shopping Scheme Service?

The service will either assist you by escorted you to the shops or preparing a list and bring the shopping home for you. Our volunteers can escort people to help them do their own shopping if you our housebound we will assist you doing the shopping bringing home for you. Some older people are able and keen to go shopping but need assistance with some aspect of it. Without this assistance their independence would be compromised.

This might include:

the volunteer giving you a lift in their car to and from a supermarket
takes a list and brings the shopping home for you
escorting you by public transport or Dial-a-Ride
carrying your bags
pushing a trolley
reaching for items on high shelves or in freezers
assistance with reading labels
the security of knowing that there will be someone with you to lend a hand.

All volunteers carry an Age Concern identity card.

Eligibility

You must live in the borough of Harrow and be aged 60+.
You must be able to get to the shops, either in a car or on public transport. The escort can assist with this if required.
You must handle your own money/credit cards.
You must agree to notify the office of any change in your arrangements.
You must agree to respect our equal opportunities policy.

How do I join the service?

Call the Elder Home Support Service Manager at the Age Concern Harrow office.

When an escort is available, you will be introduced and arrangements will be made to go shopping at a frequency, time and place to be agreed between yourself and the escort.
